Housing Accommodations, and Getting a Room That Works For You

On-Campus housing offers some accommodations to students when it comes to getting a room that is safe and inclusive. We have collected the following stories about signing up for housing. If you would like to anonymously share a story about this, please let us know! We believe these stories help incoming students understand what the process might be like and go through it more easily.

If you would like student support in advocating for housing that works for you, please reach out to us. We would be happy to support you!

Remember to review the OIT Student Code of Conduct and the Student Housing Handbook.

Student A: I’ve successfully applied for gender neutral housing twice so far; once in my Freshman year in the Residence Hall (Dorms) and once this year in the Sustainable Village. I think I just wrote that I wanted to be in the gender neutral area in the last comment area in the application, and then when they mailed everyone their room number mine was in the gender neutral area. I didn’t need to talk to anyone and I didn’t need to make a phone call.

Student C: As far as housing goes, I spent 2 terms in housing last year before COVID hit. It took quite a bit of pressure from myself and helpful staff outside of housing to be placed in housing according to my gender. I was heavily pressured into joining the gender neutral housing though that isn't what I wanted or necessarily where I felt most safe at the time. I got to live with my friend in gendered housing.

Student G: When I first was applying for dorms, I let them know I’d rather be with another trans person. So it’s kinda weird. I called Housing in a panic in the year before I would start. I told them I’m trans, and it'd be preferable. They told me they'd get back to me if it was possible. In a bit, they emailed me saying there was a trans man student wanting the same thing and so they asked both of us if we'd like that. We both said yes. So I knew my roommate months before a lot of others. They (Housing) said they'd love to help in any way they could because if I was feeling awful, I wouldn’t be able to be successful and they wanted me to be successful.
